Out from my window across from the city
I have what's considered a good view
Two blocks from the subway, three from the fountain
Where I walk to break in new shoes
She stands on the sidewalk just waving at taxis
Like horses in parades in passing
I ask where she's headed she tells me,

Out from my window "How far is Ohio?"
She laughed and pointed out east
She said, "I grew up there with my dear mother
And I haven't seen her since thirteen.

창밖으로 보이는 시내 저 건너편은
경치가 볼만하네
지하철 역에서 2 불록, 분수대에서 3 불록 거리
새 신발 신고 물집이 터지도록 거닐던 곳
그녀는 길가에서 택시를 기다리고 있었네
마치 행진대열 선두의 말같이 멋지게 보였어

나이드신 엄마를 본지 꽤나 오래 됐거든요

그녀는 웃으며 동쪽을 가르키면서
"오하이오에 계신 엄마밑에서 컸는데
13살 뒤로는 그 엄마를 보지 못했어요"
"글쎄, 우리 아버지가 딴 남자를 시켜
엄마 품에서 자는 나를 어디론가 데려갔어요
집에서 멀리 떨어진 도시로 우린 갔지요
그 후론 고향엘 가보질 못했어요
오래 됐어요, 진짜 오래 됐어요"

당신의 딸이 집에가고 싶대요
엄마가 보고 싶고, 껴안고, 키스도 하고..
