7살 때 피아노를 배우고 9살 때 드럼과 하모니카를 마스터할 정도로 음악에 천부적인 감각을 보여온 스티비는 교회 성가대에서 활동하며 가스펠 음악으로부터 많은 영향을 받았다. 61년 모타운 레코드사의 오디션 담당자 로니 화이트(Ronnie White)에게 발탁된 그는 리틀 스티비 원더라는 이름으로 63년 'Fingertips'를 발표해 상업적인 성공을 거두었고, 곧이어 [12-Year-Old Genius]라는 앨범 시리즈를 준비한다. 그러나 확실한 음악적 방향을 마련하지 못한 그는 65년 헨리 코스비(Henry Cosby), 실비아 모이(Sylvia Moy)와 함께 공동으로 작곡한 댄스 풍의 'Uptight (Everything's Alright')로 US 톱 40위에 들기까지 한동안 침체기를 겪는다.
65년과 70년 사이, 스티비의 앨범도 다른 주요 모타운 출신 스타들과 마찬가지로 음반사의 전문가에 의해 전통적인 소울 풍에 스탠다드 팝 양식이 결합된 곡들로 선곡되고 제작되어졌다. 그러나 자신의 대부분의 싱글에 공동 작곡가로 참여하는 열성과 재능을 보인 스티비는 모타운과의 계약이 만기된 71년 모타운의 양해를 얻어 자신의 프로덕션인 블랙 불 뮤직(Black Bull Music)을 설립하고, 자신의 모든 앨범의 예술적인 부분을 직접 통제할 수 있는 파격적인 계약을 맺게 된다.
이어서 그는 앨범 전 수록곡의 연주를 혼자 담당하며 전통적인 흑인음악에 최초로 신디사이저를 사용하였고, 가사에 있어서도 인종 차별적인 문제, 영적인 문제로 넓혀간 실험적이면서도 야심에 찬 두 장의 앨범 [Talking Book](72), [Innervisions](73)를 발표한다. 이 두 앨범에서 'You Are the Sunshine of My Life', 'I Believe', 'Living For the City', 'Higher Ground'로 히트를 기록한 스티비는 상업적으로나 예술적으로 진일보한 모습을 보이며 명실공히 흑인음악의 선두에 서게 되었다
